The Stikine riding was in the for-front last night at the Prestige Hudson Bay Lodge as candidates gathered to debate their platforms.

The all-candidates forum was made available to the constituents of the riding through a virtual platform hosted by the Smithers District Chamber of Commerce in order to follow safe practices during the pandemic.

Topics discussed included rail safety, environmental concerns, fishing rights, pipelines, indigenous rights, mental health & addictions, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic impacts.

In his opening remarks, NDP Candidate Nathan Cullen outlined his experience within government as an M-P and his desire to represent the riding’s constituents by bringing local issues to a provincial and national level.

Rural B-C Party candidate Darcy Repen who joined via zoom, says he would focus on inequities within the rural communities, advocate for the resource revenue sharing agreement and connect and engage with indigenous leadership.

Liberal Party candidate Gordon Sebastian says he would focus on better funding for education, child care and foster homes on reserves.

Sebastian says he is running to end I-C-B-C monopoly on insurance coverage, remove the PST and re-build the resource industry.

The Christian Heritage Party candidate Rod Taylor shared his beliefs regarding his disapproval of assisted suicide and sexual orientation and gender identity education curriculum.

We are now less than two weeks away from Election Day on Saturday, October 24th.
