Atrill resigns Smithers Council seat to launch bid for mayor's chair

Smithers Deputy Mayor Gladys Atrill has formally resigned her seat on town council in order to run for the mayor's position.
Atrill has been serving as acting mayor since Taylor Bachrach resigned last October, following his election as Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP.
In order to run in this fall's mayoral by-election, it was necessary for Atrill to resign the council seat she's held since 2014, which she said wasn't easy.
"It certainly was an odd decision when the final moment came -- it's something that I've been thinking about for quite a while so in that sense, I was quite settled with the decision, but the actual moment is a bit emotional for sure," she explained.
Councillor Casda Thomas was appointed acting mayor of Smithers.
By-elections for the mayor's seat and Atrill's now-vacant council seat will be held October 17th.
