IIO Investigates Man's Death in Nass Valley

The death of a man arrested Tuesday evening by RCMP in the Nass Valley is now under investigation by B.C.'s police watchdog agency.

The man was the suspect in a stabbing on Monroe Street in Gitlaxt'aamiks -- also known as New Aiyansh.

An RCMP news release says the victim of the stabbing had already been taken to the medical clinic when officers arrived, and before they could take the suspect into custody, the man allegedly harmed himself with a weapon.

The release says officers used a taser, there was a struggle and bystanders helped police take the man into custody.

He was taken in a police vehicle to the medical clinic, where he died.

The Independent Investigations Office is investigating to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the man's death.

The B.C. Coroners Service is also investigating.
