Kitimat Students get free bus rides

Divya Gill

Students in the Kitimat District will be able to ride the transit for free starting this September. Mayor Phil

Germuth said with this one year pilot project they hope to attract the younger generation into riding the public transit more.

"A couple of requirements are that students over the age of 14 require a student ID just so we know they are 18 or under, and if anybody doesnt have a student ID, they will be able to access the pass at the Districts office."

Germuth added this is something the district has been working for a while and to finally see it through is exciting.

"This is something we wanted to do but basically initiate the program to try to introduce more young people to public transportation and to facilitate a shift towards cleaner transportation habits. We also thought we could support families by lifting those cost barriers and increasing transporation access."

This project is not only designated to Kitimat Transit System but also applies to two parts of the Regional District Kitimat Stikine System which includes Village of Kitimaat and Cable Car
