Lanfear Hill in Terrace has been a safety issue for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians for many years now, but yesterday, Skeena-Bulkley Valley M-P Taylor Bachrach visited city council to discuss how to help with the road's reconstruction as well as adding a second railway overpass. Terrace Mayor Carol Leclerc noted that a grant they had applied for in 2019 to address some of the issues was unsuccessful. She says the city has been receiving Lanfear Hill complaints since the transportation master plan was established in 2017.

"I fully get the frustration of not feeling safe coming up or down Lanfear Hill. It's very narrow; bottleneck Skeena's view isn't much better. You are on a sidewalk, and it feels like it's just going to crumble away beside you. There are no barriers, its on a steep bank its not safe."

Mayor Leclerc says they were just informed this week by the provincial government that the overpass won't be funded. She expressed her concerns about emergency vehicles being unable to promptly reach the hospital or patients if an accident occurred on the Sande overpass.

"We are just trying to get what's best for our community and just trying to get another overpass, so people aren't impacted by waiting for trains, kids aren't waiting to cross for school. The hospital is on one side; the ambulance police and fire department are on the other side of the train tracks. It just makes logical sense to us. We don't know how to get it across to other people."

She was very grateful that Bachrach would advocate for these upgrades at the federal level.

"Making the federal government aware of the needs in our community. When things are happening in Ottawa, and we are here in the Northwest, we need to have that voice for somebody to come and champion for us because I think we are totally forgotten."

Leclerc explains that even though funding for these improvements keeps falling through, they will not stop pushing for these improved infrastructure upgrades.
