Work Channel Road still closed after weekend landslides

John Crawford

There's still no word on when Work Channel Road, off Highway 16 east of Prince Rupert, will be re-opened, after three separate landslides closed it over the weekend and briefly trapped people on the other side.
On Saturday night at around 9:20, Prince Rupert R-C-M-P were called to the scene of the landslides at the nine-kilometre mark of the road.
After determining a group of people were trapped on the other side, the R-C-M-P called in members of both the Terrace and Prince Rupert Search-and-Rescue teams to help escort them across the slide area.
A helicopter was involved in the rescue.

A field assessment has been completed by the Ministry of Forests, but there is no anticipated timeline for when the road will be reopened, and the entrance to Work Channel Road from Highway 16 will remain closed until further notice for public safety.
