Announced this morning, the Nisga'a Nation and First Nations in the Northwest have lost a beloved and respected Chief Sim’oogit Hay’mass [Chester Moore], who peacefully passed away this morning with his family at his side.

Chief Hay’mass was known as an artist, composer of many cultural songs and creating many cultural dance groups in his community, and was widely known for reviving the Nisga’a new year's 'Hobiyee' cultural celebration as it is now.

He has also received many recognitions throughout the years such as the Order of British Columbia and the Dreamcatcher Foundation Award, which is to honour trailblazing Indigenous leaders.

No arrangements have beem made yet for the memorial and funeral.
