Coast Mountain School District says Hazelton Secondary School will remain functionally closed until Monday, January 17th.

A notice from Superintendent Janet Meyer says the continued closure is due to a staff shortage and an inability to provide the required level of safety and supervision for students as a result of the shortage.

Remote and packaged learning opportunities are being made available. More information will be communicated to parents and caregivers this morning.

"We recognize this has been an incredibly stressful time for the school staff, students and families," said Meyer.

"Please be assured that the school district will be providing the support necessary to ensure a successful learning environment for students."

School District Secretary-Treasurer Ginger Fuller had confirmed earlier that the closure was a result of illness, but could not comment further due to privacy concerns.

The school has been under a functional closure since Tuesday, but it was also closed on Monday due to a heating issue.
