The Prince Rupert RCMP are informing the public of an ongoing investigation regarding a report of a vehicle that plunged into the water near Galloway Rapids Bridge.

On April 23rd at 12:45 P.M. police received a call regarding a blue Toyota Tacoma driving off the road and into the ocean at the Galloway Rapids bridge on Highway 16. First responders including the RCMP, Prince Rupert Fire and Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services attended to attempt a rescue, however, they were unsuccessful.

With the assistance of our partner agencies including the Canadian Coast Guard, Canada Border Service Agency, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, a private diving company, and Rupert / Jays Towing they were able to recover the vehicle. A deceased 53-year-old male from Port Edward, B.C was located inside the vehicle.

"We would like to thank our partners for their assistance in this file," Media Relations Officer Cst. Brody Hemrich said, "we are working with the BC Coroner's Service to determine exactly what happened in this tragic incident and we encourage anyone with information to come forward and speak with police."
