In light of the recent arctic outflow that’s hit the Northwest, a temporary daytime emergency warming shelter has opened in Terrace.
The warming shelter is located at ‘Ksan Society’s Turning Points location, at 4444 Lakelse aventue, and is open from 7am to 7pm through February 18th.
Emergency warming centres are a temporary option to provide a short-term, drop-in, warming space in Terrace for persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness;
They do not replace existing overnight shelters or other programs already in place throughout the year.
A collaborative effort between the city of Terrace and several local outreach societies, the centres are supported by Emergency Management Readiness Funding, which the city accesses when weather conditions meet certain thresholds.
Currently, cold temperatures in combination with strong outflow winds are giving wind chill values near or below minus 20.
The low temperatures and strong winds will persist through Thursday morning.
Environment Canada suggests to minimize exposed skin with hats, scarves and mittens or gloves, and say to be prepared for unusually cold temperatures and strong winds.
