BC Coroners Service releases first overdose death report of 2026

The BC Coroners Service has released their first report of 2026 on drug overdose deaths that took place during this year.

So far, their statistics only covered this past January and while illict drug related deaths were down 10 percent from January 2025, 150 people still died because of toxic drugs across the province.

Northern Health had the highest death rate among Health Authorities in that time span and Terrace had one of the highest rates among Local Health Areas.

80 percent of the deaths were said to be men and despite the decrease in deaths, the report says that nearly 5 people are dying per day.
