Ice Jam and Flooding – Bulkley River
HAZARD NOTICE
December 29, 2025, at 1400 hours
A Hazard Notice has been issued by the Town of Smithers and the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako
(RDBN) effective December 29, 2025 at 1400 hours due to ice jams and flooding on parts of the Bulkley
River. This Hazard Notice has been issued for all low-lying areas adjacent to the Bulkley River between the
Smithers Airport and the Highway 16 bridge crossing the river south of Smithers.
Residents are advised that due to the dynamic nature of ice jams there is the potential for water levels to
change quickly. It is recommended that residents and the public exercise extreme caution or limit
recreation near and around the river at this time.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO TO PREPARE FOR PROPERTY FLOODING
Take precautions to help prevent damage to your home, and to ensure personal safety by:
• Moving equipment and other belongings susceptible to water damage to higher ground.
• Moving pets and livestock to a safe area.
• Gathering essential items such as food, water, medications, and immediate care needs to sustain
you and your dependants for up to seven days.
