The community of Kitimat is set to see a different kind of election take place this coming October.

All residents will have the opportunity to elect either Gus or Koko as the Dog Mayor of Kitimat on October 17th.

The purpose of introducing the Dog Mayor is to encourage youth engagement and to promote a greater voter turnout in Kitimat.

Last year’s voter turnout was only 21% for the Mayor and Council.

Both candidates are already campaigning by visiting local schools and making plans to be a part of the Canada Day parade.

As for their campaign promises, Gus aims to introduce universal pet health care and build more fire hydrants, while Koko wants to lower property taxes for dog owners and ensure emergency vehicles have pet-friendly sirens.
