Lake Babine Delays Opening Fishery

The lake Babine Nation has had to postpone their food fishery season for now as salmon numbers are low for this time in the season.

The go-ahead for members of the Lake Babine Nation to harvest their 100 fish per household can’t be given unless 600,000 salmon pass through their counting fence. Which was the case at this time last year.

The Nation’s Chief Operating Officer Bernard Patrick says that things actually do look good for 2025 - with the initial assessment of the Skeena run indicating that 2 million fish were on their way, but late getting to their final check point.

“We are trying to be ready for all possibilities,” Patrick said, who pointed out that despite some positive results with the run last year, LBN still needed to purchase a sizable cache of salmon from the Nisga’a Nation in order to cover the food security of all families.

Patrick says everyone is anxiously awaiting the result - as this is their main source of protein now, just as centuries past.
