Last week saw the Outdoor Artist Collective hold their yearly Sima Winter Festival from Thursday to Sunday, where every day had something different going on.
One of the more notable events that was held during the festival was a workshop that took place throughout the late afternoon and early evening on Saturday at the Atlantis Taekwondo studio.
Métis Two Spirit Artist Moe Clark led the workshop and later explained what it was about;
“It was called To the Stars and Back and it was looking at singing and vocal creation through improvisation and future dreaming contexts. We really began by acknowledging these lands and waters and the Tsimshian Territory while working through different prompts and activities to explore all of the possibilities through voice. We also looked at Plains Cree Language and I invited people to consider how sound is spirit. And how anything that we voice, mumble or sing is all connected and related to land and ancestral lineages.”
It was Clark’s first time at the festival and they said that they’d be willing to do something for the festival again in the future.
Other prominent events put on at the festival included an ice skating dance party at the Terrace Sportsplex, their Cosmographies film screening and panel discussion on the first day, their Dancing in the Dark event from Friday and their Cozy Concerts and Performances that acted as the festival’s finale.
The festival looks to have been quite successful and will most likely be held once again next year.
