The Smithers RCMP got a report at the end of last week to check on a idle vehicle on VanGaalen Road and as responding officers made their way to the vehicle, the passenger left the car and fled to a nearby wooded area.
But Police were able to contain the area and the passenger, who was identified as a man named Kenneth Thomas, eventually got taken into custody by the Police.
Officers found a knife and a gun with a defaced serial number in the area and ended up charging Thomas with possession of a firearm without licence and registration, possession of a firearm knowing it was not licensed or registered, careless storage/handling of a firearm, breach of a release order, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number.
Thomas was set to appear in court sometime today.
