Steps are being take to realize a proposed 216-bed regional community care facility in Smithers, which is expected to be completed in the next four years.
Next Tuesday, January 13th, the public will have the opportunity to comment on a bylaw to permanently close and dispose of a portion of the existing Broadway Avenue road right-of-way and lane right-of-ways, which together covers 1.65 acres.

The town says that once the bylaw is adopted, the land will be disposed of to the Northern Health Authority in order to realize the proposed 216-bed regional community care facility.
In the long term care home, 160 of the beds will be new and publicly funded. 56 are replacing existing beds at Bulkley Valley Lodge.
The home will also offer a 32-space adult day program designed to support older adults living independently at home.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2028, with the home expected to be open for residents in 2030.

The new home will be designed as households, each accommodating 12 residents, with every resident having a private single-bed room and bathroom. It will include social and recreational spaces typical of a home, such as living rooms, dining rooms, activity areas and access to outdoor spaces.
Anyone who believes they will be affected by the proposed bylaw is invited to present written or verbal submissions to Council for consideration.
