6 October 2026-A group of people marched from The Garage on Kalum street. They walked through George Little Park and in front of the Terrace Public Library and then back to The Garage.
The intention of the march was to raise awareness about safety, respect, healthy relationships and violence prevention.
The march was led by Lisa Schmidt. She is the Director of Counselling & Support Programs from Ksan Society.
She said “Today we rallied for, the rights for women and girls and vulnerable persons to make it safe to walk the streets, to just be safe in our community. It’s an international rally around ending violence against women and children”.
She has been running the program for 13 years. But the program has been running since the 1970s.
For Lisa is program on a personal level means " that we’re still working on, awareness around gender based violence and ending sexual violence. And it speaks to the things that are going on around the world too".
Another member of the march said “It’s amazing. It’s hard sometimes because you feel alone in the work. You can feel very isolated and because it gets to be so much. But then you come to one of these events and you get to meet people who are in the same line of work and get to connect and realize you aren’t alone in this and that everyone’s dealing with the same things”.
She also added, “Everyone’s dealing with something at a certain point in time, and just being there and being able to come together as a community and its entirety is extremely important. And I’m so excited, I could be here today”.
