The start of the new school year is nearly here and a topic of discussion that has re-emerged is safety in school zones.
A topic that several BC drivers apparently don’t take as seriously they should, as a new ICBC survey revealed that 31 percent of the drivers they interviewed admitted at least sometimes to speeding in school zones.
The Terrace RCMP recently posted tips on how to stay safe that are directed towards students, parents and drivers.
Drivers are advised to avoid distractions, slow down in residential areas and watch for children while also staying aware of school buses because vehicles heading in both directions have to stop when it’s lights flash.
Parents are asked to make sure that their kids know the basics of crossing the street like stopping, looking both ways and ensuring that there aren’t any incoming vehicles or that they’ve stopped completely.
Fines for drivers who don’t abide by the 30 km per hour speed limit or other school zone rules can go up to $368 in Terrace.
The Terrace RCMP will also increase their presence in school zones soon to make sure that the rules of the road are followed.
