Train Derails Following Mudslide Brought Upon by Heavy Winter Storm

(Jim Henry Jr.)

Monday-- Around 12:45, a train was derailed following a mudslide at Mile 80 off the Skeena River, in the Lax Kw’alaams Territory.

Here is CN Rail’s latest Statement:

CN crews worked safely through the night at the site of the derailment, caused by a mudslide, that occurred Monday afternoon near Port Edward, British Columbia. 27 empty grain hopper rail cars and one locomotive are currently being reported as derailed in various positions. There are no dangerous goods, fires, or injuries, nor is there any threat to the public as a result of this derailment. Work is anticipated to continue throughout Tuesday, March 17th. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

While the landslide activity continues, The Land, Resources and Stewardship Department continues to notify Lax Kw’alaams members and residence about the risks of landslide.

Following the derailment, the Prince Rupert ground search and rescue team helped in the extraction of passengers. The team stood down after helping the individuals exit the train safely. They, too, have reported no injuries.

Furthermore on the context of the weather, they communicated that the current atmospheric river is bringing a lot of rainfall and melting a lot of snow on the north coast, which makes the terrain tremendously unstable.

This makes the ground prone to landslides. Furthermore, advised everyone to exercise caution on steep slopes and coastal roads.
