Towards the end of last week, the University of Northern BC held an open house that showed off their brand new campus located in Terrace.
And at the event, Nathan Lachowsky, UNBC’s Dean of Faculty and Human and Health Sciences, talked about how he was excited about the new campus while also listing off some of the programs that they offer in Terrace and providing some other details about the open house;
“We have a Bachelor of Social Work, a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing that people can complete right here in Terrace. And we’re sharing a bit about the programs and connecting with community partners who help make those possible.
Lachowsky next talked a bit about the reception they get in the Northwest as well as the importance of the programs that they offer in the area;
“We always have a warm reception in the Northwest. I think people really care about the local community. And the programs we deliver here are really important to making sure we’ve got healthy sustainable communities. There’s lots of people that are interested in coming and checking out if that might be the right program for them as a high school student, or maybe they’re interested in it for their kid as a parent.”
Another factor of the new campus opening that Lawchowsky discussed included how staff and students were adjusting to moving from their previous facility;
“Transitions are always tough and I really want to applaud our staff and faculty, especially out here in the Northwest, who have supported that move. We’re here in our new facilities, we’re set up in our classroom and our new faculty offices. For our students, we try to really support make sure that it’s felt like as smooth of a transition as it can be. With all new things, there’s lots of bumps, but we’re sorting those out and we’ve had a really great partner in the School District here, who have opened their doors in terms of hosting us. I think that’s really great and has opened up some new possibilities for collaboration. I think what’s really important is that UNBC is committed to education in the Northwest. We’re not going anywhere, in fact, we’re working on a new, bold and inclusive regional strategy to really think about how we can enhance and deliver on a truly northern mandate for our university.”
UNBC also placed 2nd amongst small Canadian universities in the latest annual Maclean’s rankings and it’s the 23rd straight year they’ve finished in the top 5 of their category.
Another major event they’re running will take place on October 26th from 5 to 7 PM at the Terrace Sportsplex Banquet Room, and it’s a session where people can give them feedback in person on their regional plan to support Northern BC Communities in the coming years.
