Yvonne Nielsen: Turning Trauma into Advocacy for Brain Injury Awareness

(CFTKTV News)

June marks Brain Injury Awareness Month across Canada—a time to spotlight the often-invisible challenges faced by millions living with acquired brain injuries (ABIs). One of those voices of strength and hope is Yvonne Nielsen, a resilient survivor whose life changed forever in 1987 when she sustained a traumatic brain injury.

Now, at 61, Yvonne has become a passionate advocate, educator, and symbol of perseverance in the brain injury community.

Raising Awareness, Changing Perceptions

According to Brain Injury Canada, brain injuries affect millions of Canadians, yet many remain undiagnosed, unsupported, or misunderstood. A brain injury may be caused by trauma, stroke, tumors, or even prolonged substance abuse. It can happen suddenly or develop over time.

This June, Brain Injury Canada is calling on communities to help raise awareness by engaging online:

  • Like, comment, and share posts using the hashtag #BrainInjuryAwarenessMonth
  • Create your own posts to support and share stories of survival, hope, and education

Yvonne’s Tips for a Healthy Brain

As someone who continues to thrive while living with a brain injury, Yvonne encourages everyone to protect and nourish their brain health. Her advice includes:

  • Challenge your brain: Try puzzles (especially 3D), brain games, or learn a new skill like a language or craft
  • Stay physically active: Tai chi, walking, and other sports promote balance and coordination
  • Get proper rest: 6–8 hours of sleep is essential for brain recovery and performance
  • Eat brain-friendly foods: Include protein, fruits, vegetables, omega-3s (like salmon), and unsaturated fats
  • Stay social: Laugh, sing, and enjoy music—being socially engaged is great for emotional well-being
  • Prioritize safety: Always wear helmets, seatbelts, safety gear, and life jackets
  • Avoid harmful substances: Limit or eliminate alcohol, drugs, and smoking.
