The Gitxsan Huwilp goverment is once again reminding the public that they have banned fishing on the Babine, Bulkley, Nass, Kispiox, and Skeena rivers, in areas that are Gitxsan lands for anyone who is not Gitxsan.
Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs say that sport fishing on any traditional area - known as an anaat - is prohibited.
The Gitxsan government says that low waters and over-exposed spawning beds overkill the fish stocks. they say that catch and release is playing with fish - which breaks centuries old Gitxsan law. they add that fish are a food staple for the Gitxsan.
They also add that provincial fishing permits do not allow access to Gitxsan, Anaat or Laxyip, and kindly request that fisherpeople check their maps.
