PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. -- The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako and the Wet’suwet’en First Nation have issued an evacuation order for the area around Bulkley Lake, located between Topley and Burns Lake, due to the presence of a 250-hectare wildfire.
The evacuation order, which was issued at 10 p.m. on July 7th, is in effect for the area east of Bedore Rd. to west of Broman Lake Rd., and south of Bulkley Lake. This includes Duncan Lake Indian Reserve #2, but it does not include Highway 16 or the CN Rail line.
The regional district says everyone in this area must leave immediately and either register at the reception centre in the Tom Forsyth Memorial Arena in Burns Lake or contact the regional district’s emergency support services director at 250-692-9901.
Evacuees are advised to close all windows and doors, take critical items if they’re immediately available, gather family members and shut off all gas and electrical appliances except refrigerators and freezers. It’s also advised to not take more vehicles than needed.
Additionally, an evacuation alert has been issued for the area east of Taman Creek Rd. to west of Broman Lake Forest Service Road. People in this area must local all family members or co-workers and plan to meet outside the evacuation area should an evacuation be called while separated.
People are also advised to gather essential items, move pets and live stock to a safe area, and arrange transportation plans in the event of an evacuation.
According to the B.C. Wildfire Dashboard, the Bulkley Lake Wildfire was discovered on July 7th.
There are currently eight wildfires in the Northwest Fire Centre region. Four are listed as “under control” and two others are labelled as “new.” The Bulkley Lake wildfire is deemed a “fire of note,” while a 795-hectare wildfire east of Iskut in the north end of Spatsizi Provincial Park is labelled as “out of control.”
