PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. -- The Town of Smithers, the Village of Telkwa and the Bulkley-Nechako Regional District have issued a joint hazard notice for all low-lying areas adjacent to the Bulkley River due to growing concerns surrounding ice jams.

These occur when pieces of ice from a river clump together and block the flow of a river, creating flood risks in the process.

Residents in low-lying areas adjacent to the river are advised to practice "extreme caution" or limit their recreation near and around the river at this time.

A news release says residents can protect themselves and their home by moving their belongings to higher ground, bringing animals to a safe area and gathering essential items that can sustain you and your dependents for up to seven days.
