At the end of last week, the Adventures In Healthcare program hosted it’s final two event days for this year here in the City of Terrace.
This program exists mainly to give 36 selected Grade 10 and 11 students the chance to see what a future healthcare career could look like for them.
Rotary Club of Terrace member Brian Downie, who helped put on the event, explained how the students would be taught during this program;
“It’s hands on as much as possible. The students will meet health professionals, doctors, nurses, lab techs and they get to ask them all sorts of questions to see what they do while also going through some exercises in the hospital.”
Downie also went onto mention that the end of learning for the students didn’t mean that the program was quite over yet;
“At the end of the three days, we have a feedback session. We have found in previous years that students are really excited and enthusiastic and they want to know more. They want to give us their thoughts on what they think about the program and ask questions about the future.”
Another reason for the program’s existence is to help young people gain more of an interest in pursuing a healthcare career, so that the major need for healthcare professionals in our province can be filled.
This program has been said to have already led to several people finishing their medical school studies as they make their way into the workforce.
