District of Kitimat shoots down request for health impact assessment

Earlier this week, the District of Kitimat held a regular Council meeting that began with a Delegation Notice from a local community member and Registered Nurse named Ankur Patel.

Patel was there to request a cumulative health impact assessment of LNG after telling Council how he was hearing from residents that during the local LNG Facility’s Flaring periods, they were finding that experience increased symptoms, an increasing reliance on medication and an increase in residents asking questions about Flaring.

After several councillors expressed different viewpoints on the topic, the request was denied in a vote by a total of 4-2, with those against it not seeing the need for it and being satisfied with the Province’s oversight of the facility.
