Mini Library installed by Ferry Island Playground

Back on June 27th, the Rotary Club of Terrace-Skeena Valley officially installed a mini library at the playground located at Ferry Island’s Campground with help from Rotary Club of Terrace and Visitor Centre volunteers.

The now Former President of the Rotary Club, LeeAnne Wilson, went onto explain about where the idea to install the library came from, why the Ferry Island playground was thought to be the best place for it as well as why these mini libraries are important;

“it was something that I’ve seen all through my travels for my job and I thought this was great place because lots of people use the park for walking and camping. We already had the playground behind us so we did a work bee and we did the cleaning of it. We thought this was a great place to give back to the community. Books are expensive and if we don’t know what to do with them afterwards, why not donate them and you might find something else that intrigues you. So why not pass it on or trade it in? It’s great community.”

It was also emphasized that Ferry Island was a good spot for it since many people typically visit it for a variety of reasons.

Another regular member of the club, Paul Bjorn, got his chance to detail the process of installing the mini library and mention how it was trickier than some might think;

“The original plan, when we were talking about it, was to get everybody out, hand dig with shovels and to take turns. And I thought that doesn’t sound fun, so I asked if we can we bring our mini excavators if we have one. And I happen to have one and it makes pretty short work of digging in a foundation for something like this. We copied the way BC Hydro sets their poles where we put a piece of culvert in first, then pack the pole and gravel inside the culvert so it can stand plumb.”

The installation method also made it possible for it to be easily removed and replaced with out digging up the lawn, should a problem ever arise with the wood pole.
