Last week saw a team made up of teens from multiple Northern BC Communities make their way to Alberta for a Hockey Tournament and they overcame all the competition in their way.
The Alberta Champions Cup is listed as North America’s largest Spring Hockey Tournament, it was held in Calgary from April 24th to 26th and as was mentioned by the Skeena Selects Head Coach, Clint Ferretti, it featured one team comprised of some of the best young hockey players Northern BC has to offer;
“The Skeena Selects is a group of 2010 kids from Terrace, Kitimat, Vanderhoof, Smithers to start and then we invited 3 Prince George Cougars players to come play this year and we went to the Calgary Spring Cup. Which is like a mini juniors level Hockey Tournament. These kids are all out their for one reason and that’s to skate hard, play hard and win the cup. And our boys had it in them this year.”
The Skeena Selects hadn’t played since March before this tourney and yet, they went a perfect 6 and 0 to take home a first place finish and some championship rings in the Tier 1/2 integrated Division.
Coach Ferretti also expressed just how proud he was of his team’s effort;
“These kids had to give it their all. They could not let up and I have never been more proud. To see these kids come together the way they had, the way they played together, I had every different town on the ice together and every kid knew what they were supposed to do. There wasn’t one out there making our team worse.”
Several of the players on the team, such as Brad Franklin, Giovanni Ferretti, Jaron Monsen and Kale King, said that it was a great feeling to win this tournament with a great group of people.
This win serves as a major victory for Northern BC as a whole as well, since it shows that many communities are capable of producing great hockey talents and when put together, they can accomplish great things.
