The Town of Smithers has recently warned that they’ve been getting reports of bears appearing along the local perimeter trail.
As a result of these reports, the Town has relayed some tips on what to do to avoid encountering a bear yourself.
People are advised to travel in a group whenever possible, make noises or talk loudly to spook away any bears in the areas, only use officially marked trails and only hike or bike during daylight hours.
And if you do encounter a bear, maintain a safe distance, stay calm and don’t run away and make sure to carry bear spray with you.
