PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. -- The Bulkley-Nechako Regional District has issued an evacuation alert for the Ebenezer Flats area of Smithers due to growing concerns of ice jams on the Bulkley River, which have the potential to cause floods.

"Because of the potential danger to life an health the NDBN has issued an Evacuation Alert from the corner of Viewmount Road N along the south side of Kidd Road to the end of Kidd Road and south along Viewmount Road N to the Bulkley River," reads the evacuation alert.

This includes all properties on Columbia Street, 22nd Avenue and Bulkley Street, as shown in the map above.

The alert was issued to ensure that residents are prepared in the event of an evacuation order.

People living in this area are advised to locate all family members or co-workers, gather essential items, prepare to move any persons with mobility challenges, move pets or livestock to a safe area and arrange a transportation plan in the event of an evacuation order.

The alert says residents will be given "as much advance notice as possible" prior to any potential evacuation order, but they note residents may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.

A reception centre will be opened in the event of an evacuation order.
