SMITHERS. B.C. - Concerns are growing today after the Bulkley River near Smithers has been clogging with ice, forcing the water to rise onto the banks.

Earlier this week, the Town of Smithers made a Facebook post noting three more areas that will be put under an evacuation alert, joining the Ebeneezer Flats.

The new areas include:

  • 2100 blocks of Riverside Drive
  • 2100 blocks of Main Street
  • 2700 block of Pacific Avenue (Fall Fair Grounds)

With an evacuation alert, the town notes that things could change on a dime and asks those residents to prepare to evacuate in the event of excessive flooding.

The town also reminds all residents to stay off the riverbanks during this time and avoid travel through the area if possible.

If residents have questions, they can contact the town, 250-847-1600.

A reception centre will be opened in the event of an evacuation order.
